Earthing is the safety connection that allows fault current to flow and trip your protective devices. A poor or missing earth can leave metalwork live in a fault. Checking the incoming supply is the first step.

The Symptom

"I'm not sure if my house is properly earthed. The electrician mentioned PME - what is that? How do I know if I'm safe?" Customers buying older properties or having work done often ask. They may have received an EICR with FI (further investigation) or C2 for earthing.

The Detective Work

The electrician identifies the earthing system: TN-S (separate earth from supply), TN-C-S/PME (combined neutral and earth at the cutout), or TT (earth rod). Ze (external loop impedance) is measured at the origin. For PME, Ze is typically low (under 0.35 O). For TT, it can be higher and RCD protection is essential. Continuity of the main earth to the consumer unit and bonding to gas/water is verified. The electrician checks for correct cable size (BS 7671 Table 54.7) and secure connections. Any deficiencies are reported and remediated.

Thanet Grid Note

Most of Thanet is supplied with PME. Older parts of Margate and some rural edges may have TN-S or TT. Coastal soil can affect earth rod resistance - sandy or rocky ground may require deeper or additional rods. If you have an earth rod, ensure it is tested periodically as part of your EICR. Bonding to incoming gas and water is mandatory; in older homes it is sometimes missing or corroded.
