The Problem

You want a sleek lit mirror above the basin - maybe with USB for a toothbrush charger. But bathrooms have strict electrical zones, and one wrong move can fail an EICR or create a shock risk. What are the rules, and how do you get it right?

Tech Explained

Think of bathroom zones as rings around the water: Zone 0 is inside the bath/shower (IPX7 minimum). Zone 1 is above the bath to 2.25m and around the basin. Zone 2 extends 60cm beyond Zone 1. Outside zones, normal rules apply. Mirrors and lights in Zone 1 and 2 need appropriate IP ratings (usually IP44 minimum) and must be suitable for the zone. Low-voltage LED mirror lights with proper transformers are common - the key is correct positioning and IP rating.

The Thanet Angle

Bathroom renovations are booming in Margate, Ramsgate, and Broadstairs - older properties getting new suites. We're often asked to add mirror lights, shaver sockets, or heated towel rails. The zone rules aren't optional; they're there because water and electricity are a lethal mix. A qualified electrician will ensure compliance.

ROI & Benefit

A properly installed lit mirror adds real value - both in daily use and at sale. Doing it wrong can mean remedial work, failed EICRs, or worse. The cost of a professional install is small compared to the cost of fixing a non-compliant job. Get it right first time.
