How billing works

Straightforward, fair, no surprises

One-hour minimum (emergencies)

All emergency call-outs are charged for a minimum of one hour. This covers travel, immediate assessment, and the disruption of an urgent response at any hour.

30-minute blocks after the first hour

Time beyond the first hour is charged in 30-minute increments — not rounded up to the nearest full hour. So two hours ten minutes is billed as two hours thirty minutes.

Parts at cost price

Materials and parts are charged at supplier cost price. No inflated mark-ups. Where materials are purchased from a local merchant, the receipt is available on request.

VAT not applicable

Thanet Electrical operates below the VAT registration threshold. The rates shown are the total you pay — there is no VAT to add.

Loyalty discounts at discretion

Repeat customers, referrals, and long-standing relationships are regularly rewarded with a personal discount at the end of the job. The rates above are the published maximum — not the minimum.

No travel charge within Thanet

Call-outs within the Isle of Thanet carry no additional travel or mileage charge. Work outside Thanet may carry a travel allowance — confirmed upfront before accepting.

Rates FAQ

Why do rates go up in the evening and at night?
Time-of-day tiers exist because working at 10pm or 6am on a Sunday has a very real personal cost. Tier 1 (Mon–Fri 08:00–18:00) is the standard competitive rate. Tier 2 covers the early-morning and early-evening shoulder periods on weekdays, plus full weekend and bank holiday daytime hours. Tier 3 applies overnight (20:00–08:00 any day) and on Christmas and Easter. The tiers are honest and published upfront — you know exactly what to expect before you call, not after you see the invoice.
What counts as "domestic" versus "commercial"?
Domestic rates apply to homes, private rental properties, and residential conversions. Commercial rates apply to business premises, retail units, landlord communal areas, offices, and any work requiring formal RAMS (Risk Assessment & Method Statement) documentation. If you’re unsure which applies, just ask — it will be confirmed before any work begins.
Is there a minimum charge for booked (non-emergency) work?
For pre-booked work, there is no fixed minimum charge. Very small jobs (a single socket replacement, a like-for-like fitting swap) are typically quoted as a flat job rate rather than hourly — so you pay for the work, not the clock. The hourly rate applies to larger jobs where duration is harder to predict upfront.
Can I get a fixed-price quote instead of hourly?
Yes, for most defined jobs (EICR, rewiring, consumer unit, EV charger installation) a fixed-price quote is available after a free site visit. The fixed price is agreed before any work begins. Hourly rates typically apply only to reactive fault-finding and maintenance where the scope is genuinely unknown at the start.
How do I pay?
Bank transfer (preferred), cash, or card on completion. For commercial and larger domestic jobs, a Zoho Invoice is sent on completion with payment due within 7 days. You can also pay securely online via the Pay page.
