Behind the Scenes
Behind the cover of your consumer unit - the thing most people call the fuse box - are dozens of components: breakers, busbars, terminals. Cheaper units cut corners on materials and tolerances. Premium brands like Hager and Schneider use better plastics, more robust connections, and stricter quality control. When a consumer unit fails, it can mean fire or loss of power to the whole house. The extra cost of a quality unit is insurance against that.
The Details
I use consumer units from manufacturers like Hager and Schneider because they offer: better thermal performance (less risk of overheating under load), more reliable MCB and RCBO mechanisms, and enclosures that meet the latest fire-resistance requirements. Budget units can have thinner busbars, weaker spring contacts, and plastics that degrade faster. In a fault condition, that can mean the difference between a clean trip and a dangerous overload.
The price difference might be £50-100 or more on the unit alone - but over a 15-20 year lifespan, that is a few pounds a year for significantly better protection. For landlord properties and family homes, it is a false economy to fit the cheapest option.
Jargon Buster
- Consumer unit - The main distribution board (fuse box) that feeds all circuits in your home.
- MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) - The switch that trips when a circuit draws too much current.
- RCBO - A combined MCB and RCD in one device; gives each circuit its own overload and earth-fault protection.
The Insurance Angle
Some insurers ask what make of consumer unit you have. Premium brands with a strong track record can support a claim if there is ever an electrical fire - demonstrating that the installation used quality components. Cheap, unknown brands can raise questions about compliance and due diligence.
Local Building Control
BS 7671 Amendment 3 requires consumer unit enclosures in certain locations to be non-combustible or to meet fire containment standards. Premium units from Hager and Schneider are designed to meet these requirements. When we notify work to Thanet District Council, the specification forms part of our compliance documentation.
