You've swapped your old bulbs for LEDs, but now your dimmer makes them buzz, flicker, or refuse to dim properly. Sound familiar? It's one of the most common callouts we get in Thanet - and it's almost always a compatibility issue. Here's how to get it right.
The Why: What's Actually Going On
Traditional dimmers were designed for incandescent and halogen bulbs, which behave like simple resistors. LEDs use drivers and electronics that need a different type of signal. Leading-edge (triac) dimmers can cause LEDs to flicker, buzz, or fail to dim smoothly. Trailing-edge (reverse-phase) dimmers work better with most LEDs. The minimum load is another gotcha: old dimmers often need a minimum wattage (e.g. 40W). A single 5W LED doesn't meet that, so the dimmer misbehaves. You need an LED-compatible dimmer with a low minimum load.
Roy's Pro Tip
Look for dimmers marked 'LED compatible' or 'trailing edge'. Many quality brands (e.g. Varilight V-Pro) list compatible bulbs. When in doubt, buy the dimmer and one bulb first - test before fitting the whole room.
Safety Warning
Never open a dimmer or change wiring with the power on. If you're unsure about wiring, always use a qualified electrician. Incorrect installation can cause fire risk or electric shock.
