DANGER
Always isolate power before touching wiring. Heating wiring can carry mains voltage. Call a qualified electrician for installation.
The C-Wire (Common Wire) Check
Most smart thermostats (Nest, Hive, Tado) need a continuous power supply. The C-wire (common, usually blue) provides 24V constant power. Old systems often only had Live and Switched Live – no C-wire.
- Check your existing thermostat: Open the backplate and count the wires. If you have 5+ wires including a blue (common), you're likely good.
- No C-wire? Nest can sometimes use a "power stealing" mode; Hive and Tado may need a wiring adapter or new cable run. A qualified electrician can add a C-wire from the boiler or install a fused spur.
Boiler Compatibility
Most modern combi, system, and heat-only boilers work with smart thermostats. Compatibility depends on wiring at the programmer/honeywell-style box. Key points:
- Combi boilers: Nest, Hive, and Tado all support combi systems. Usually wired at the boiler or a wiring centre.
- System boilers (with hot water cylinder): May need separate controls for heating and hot water. Tado and Hive offer multi-zone options.
- Heat-only (gravity/Y-plan/S-plan): All three brands support these; wiring varies. Check manufacturer compatibility tool before buying.
Nest vs Hive vs Tado – Quick Comparison
- Nest: Learn schedule, sleek design. Works well with Google Home. Needs C-wire or power stealing.
- Hive: British Gas ecosystem; works with many boilers. Hub required. Good for simple on/off scheduling.
- Tado: Geofencing, multi-room support. Often needs C-wire. Strong for larger homes with zones.
Use each brand's online compatibility checker for your boiler model before purchase.
