Dealing with a sudden power cut can be frustrating, especially in the middle of a storm in Margate or a busy morning in Ramsgate. Most of the time, your "RCD" (the big switch in your consumer unit) is just doing its job: protecting you from an electric shock.
Before you call out an emergency electrician, follow this simple guide. You might find the "fault" is actually just a toaster or a damp outdoor light!
SAFETY FIRST
If you see smoke, smell burning, or hear crackling, do not attempt these steps. Turn off your main power and call us immediately.
Step 1: The "Flick Test"
Sometimes, a bulb blowing or a minor surge can "trip" the circuit.
- Open your consumer unit (fuse box).
- Look for the switch that is in the OFF position (usually pointing down).
- Try to flick it back UP.
- If it stays up: It was likely a "nuisance trip." You're good to go.
- If it trips immediately: There is a permanent fault. Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: The "Process of Elimination"
If your RCD won't stay up, a specific appliance is likely leaking electricity to the earth. Here is how to find it yourself:
Unplug everything
Go around the house and unplug every single appliance on that circuit. Note: You must pull the plug out of the socket, not just turn the switch off. Don't forget the hidden ones like the dishwasher, the fridge, or the washing machine.
Reset the RCD
Go back to your consumer unit and flick the RCD switch to the ON (up) position.
The check
- RCD stays up? Great! Your house wiring is fine. The fault is definitely one of your appliances.
- RCD still trips? This indicates a fault with the actual house wiring or a "fixed" appliance like a shower or water heater. Stop here and call Thanet Electrical for our fault finding service.
Step 3: Finding the Culprit
If the RCD stayed up in Step 2, it's time to play detective:
- One by one, plug your appliances back in and turn them on.
- The moment you plug in the "faulty" device, the RCD will trip again.
- Bingo! You've found the problem. Leave that device unplugged and get it repaired or replaced.
Coastal Tip: The "Thanet Humidity" Factor
Living in Broadstairs or Westgate means our homes deal with salt air and high humidity. We often find that outdoor "security lights" or garden sockets are the secret culprits. If it's been raining heavily, check your outdoor electrics first!
