The 'Why'

Outdoor lights fail because of blown bulbs, tripped circuits, blocked or faulty PIR sensors, or water damage. Coastal salt air in Margate and Ramsgate speeds corrosion. Most issues are a simple bulb swap or sensor clean - damp damage needs professional repair.

The 5-Minute Fix

  • Check switch and circuit: Ensure the indoor switch is ON. Check the consumer unit - has the circuit tripped? Reset and test. If it trips again, there is a fault.
  • Replace the bulb: Switch off, wait for the fitting to cool, replace with the correct base (GU10, E27) and IP-rated bulb if exposed. LEDs suit PIR lights.
  • PIR/sensor lights: Ensure the sensor is not covered by plants or dirt. Check the sensitivity dial and "test" or "override" switch. Dawn-dusk sensors can stick.

When it's more than a simple reset

If checks don't fix the light, likely causes include:

  • Water ingress and corrosion - seals fail, terminals corrode; fitting may need replacement.
  • Failed PIR sensor or driver - internal electronics can fail; unit replacement needed.
  • Faulty outdoor cable or junction - damaged or poorly sealed connections.

For damp-damaged fittings, PIR replacements, or new outdoor circuits, see our Security Lighting service.

Professional Safety Checklist

  • Isolate power at the consumer unit before any electrical work
  • Use a voltage tester to confirm circuits are dead
  • Ensure all work complies with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)
  • Keep a record of any modifications for future reference
  • When in doubt, consult a qualified electrician
