Behind the Scenes

When an RCD trips "for no reason," there is always a reason - but it can be hard to find. Behind the scenes, fault finding involves systematic testing: insulation resistance, earth leakage measurements, and process-of-elimination. What looks like random tripping to a homeowner is usually a diagnosable fault - damp, degraded cable, or a failing appliance - that a qualified electrician can locate and fix.

The Details

Nuisance tripping means the RCD trips when there is no dangerous fault - or when the fault is too small to justify the disruption. Causes include: cumulative leakage from many appliances (each under the 30mA trip threshold, but adding up), damp in outdoor fittings, degradation in older cables, or a sensitive RCD. Sometimes the RCD itself is faulty. The challenge is finding which circuit or appliance is the culprit.

We use an insulation resistance tester (often called a "megger") to check each circuit for leakage to earth. We may use an earth leakage clamp meter to measure steady-state leakage. A process-of-elimination test - turning off circuits one by one - helps isolate the problem. In coastal areas like Thanet, damp in outside lights and sockets is common; we check those first.

Jargon Buster

  • RCD (Residual Current Device) - A safety switch that cuts power when it detects current leaking to earth (e.g. through a person or faulty insulation).
  • Insulation resistance - A test that measures how well cables are insulated; low values indicate potential faults.
  • Earth leakage - Small amounts of current flowing to earth instead of through the neutral; can trigger RCDs.

The Insurance Angle

If nuisance tripping leads to a homeowner bypassing the RCD or ignoring a fault, and a fire or shock occurs, the insurer may argue contributory negligence. Having a qualified electrician locate and fix the cause - and document it with a Minor Works Certificate - shows you took reasonable steps to maintain safety.

Local Building Control

Fault finding and repair work is not usually notifiable - unless it involves a new circuit or consumer unit replacement. But the repair should still be done to BS 7671 standards. We work with Thanet District Council when any notifiable element is involved.

Professional Safety Checklist

  • Isolate power at the consumer unit before any electrical work
  • Use a voltage tester to confirm circuits are dead
  • Ensure all work complies with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)
  • Keep a record of any modifications for future reference
  • When in doubt, consult a qualified electrician
