If bulbs blow regularly in the same fitting or on the same circuit, the problem is often the installation - not the bulbs. Voltage, connection quality, and mechanical stress all play a part.

The Symptom

"I replace the bulb and it blows within weeks. I've tried different brands. It keeps happening in the same light." Or: "The landing light blows every few months - no other lights in the house do." Customers assume cheap bulbs or bad luck, but repeated failures in one place suggest a wiring or supply issue.

The Detective Work

The electrician checks supply voltage at the fitting - overvoltage shortens bulb life. Loose connections cause arcing and heat, damaging both the lampholder and the bulb. Lamp bases may show signs of overheating (brown marks). Vibration from ceiling fans or slamming doors can damage filaments. Dimmers incompatible with LED can cause issues. The electrician tests voltage, inspects terminations, and may recommend upgrading the lampholder or fitting. In older properties, undersized or damaged cable can cause voltage drop under load, leading to repeated stress on bulbs.

Thanet Grid Note

Voltage in Thanet is generally stable, but properties at the end of long distribution runs can see variation. Victorian and Edwardian homes in Margate and Ramsgate often have original ceiling roses and lampholders - loose screws and corroded contacts are common. Upgrading to a properly terminated fitting often solves the problem.
