The 'Why'

LEDs flicker, stay off, or buzz because of wrong fittings (e.g. non-dimmable on a dimmer), incompatible bases, or failed lamps. Old halogen dimmers often don't work with LEDs. Matching the base and using "dimmable" bulbs fixes most issues.

The 5-Minute Fix

  • Switch off and cool: Turn off the light, wait a minute, then remove the old bulb (twist anticlockwise for bayonet, unclip for GU10). Match the base: B22, E27, E14, or GU10.
  • Choose the right LED: Same base and wattage (or lower). On a dimmer? Use "dimmable" and ideally "trailing edge" compatible. Non-dimmable LEDs on dimmers often flicker or buzz.
  • Fit firmly: Push and twist clockwise (bayonet) or screw in gently (Edison). Don't overtighten. Try the bulb in another fitting to rule out a faulty lamp.

When it's more than a simple reset

If the right bulb still fails or flickers, likely causes include:

  • Incompatible or old dimmer - trailing-edge dimmers may be needed; upgrade by a qualified electrician.
  • Faulty lampholder or fitting - loose contacts, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
  • Downlight transformer/driver failure - LED downlights often have built-in drivers that can fail.

Professional Safety Checklist

  • Isolate power at the consumer unit before any electrical work
  • Use a voltage tester to confirm circuits are dead
  • Ensure all work complies with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)
  • Keep a record of any modifications for future reference
  • When in doubt, consult a qualified electrician
