Zone Location Minimum IP rating / equipment
Zone 0 Inside bath or shower IPX7 minimum; SELV only (max 12 V). No 230 V sockets or switches.
Zone 1 Directly above bath/shower to 2.25 m IPX4 minimum (BS 7671); IPX5 often used for shower. Fixed equipment only; RCD protection required.
Zone 2 0.6 m horizontally around Zone 1, up to 2.25 m IPX4 minimum. Sockets (e.g. shaver units) must be IPX4 or better and suitably located.
Outside zones Beyond Zone 2 IP20 minimum. Standard equipment with RCD protection. No sockets in Zone 0, 1 or 2.
