You've gone electric - or you're about to. Now you need a home charger. With OZEV grants, tethered vs untethered, 7kW vs 22kW, and a raft of brands, it can feel overwhelming. Here's a clear guide to get you started in Thanet.

The Why: What's Actually Going On

A dedicated EV charge point is safer and faster than a 13A plug. Most homes fit a 7kW unit (single-phase), which adds roughly 30 miles per hour. 22kW needs three-phase supply - many domestic properties don't have it. Tethered cables are attached to the unit (convenient if you always use the same connector). Untethered uses your own cable (flexible for different EVs). OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) grants have changed - check current schemes. Installation must be carried out by an OZEV-approved installer for grant eligibility. The work is notifiable under Part P.

Roy's Pro Tip

Choose an OZEV-approved installer from the start - retrofitting for grant compliance is rarely possible. If you're planning solar or battery storage, tell your electrician; they can future-proof the installation.

Safety Warning

Never use a standard domestic socket for regular EV charging. They're not designed for sustained high current and can overheat. Dedicated charge points include built-in protection (RCD, PEN fault protection).
