The Dream Look
You've got height - perhaps 3m or more. Do you fill the ceiling with downlights for even wash, or hang a bold pendant (or three) and let it make a statement? Both work; the choice depends on how you use the room and the vibe you want.
Trade Secret
For high ceilings, pendants need to be sized up - a tiny fitting gets lost. As a rule, add 2-3cm of diameter per 30cm of ceiling height. Downlights give even light but can feel clinical; mix them with a feature pendant over a table or seating area for the best of both. And if you're fitting downlights in a ceiling with insulation above, use fire-rated, enclosed units - they're required in most lofts and protect the lamp from insulation contact.
The Mess Factor
Downlights mean cutting holes - typically 50-80mm each. We'll need loft access or lift floorboards above to run cables. Fire-rated fittings take a little longer to install but are non-negotiable where there's insulation. Pendants need a single ceiling rose or hook - less invasive, but we'll still need to run cable if there's no existing point. For a roomful of downlights, expect a day; a pendant or two might be a morning.
Thanet Home Highlight
Ramsgate and Margate are full of Victorian and Georgian properties with enviable ceiling heights. Those high ceilings are perfect for oversized pendants - we've hung some spectacular pieces in Ramsgate townhouses. Broadstairs' mix of Victorian villas and newer builds means we do both: downlights for modern open-plan spaces, pendants for period rooms that deserve a focal point.
