The Problem
You've read about arc faults - when damaged or loose wiring sparks and can cause fires. Older homes are especially at risk, with ageing cables and decades of DIY additions. AFDDs (Arc Fault Detection Devices) are the new line of defence. But do you need them?
Tech Explained
Think of an AFDD as a smoke alarm for your wiring: it listens for the distinctive signature of an arc (the crackling spark from a loose connection or damaged cable). Normal operation doesn't trigger it; real faults do. When detected, it trips the circuit before heat builds up. Traditional MCBs and RCDs don't catch these - they respond to overload or earth leakage, not arcing.
The Thanet Angle
Thanet has a high proportion of pre-1980s housing. Old rubber cable, undersized circuits, and junction boxes hidden in loft spaces are common. In Margate and Ramsgate, we see plenty of installations where AFDDs would add meaningful protection. They're now recommended for certain circuits (e.g. bedrooms, escape routes) in the latest regulations.
ROI & Benefit
AFDDs cost more than standard RCBOs - but they can prevent fires that cause thousands in damage and risk lives. For older homes with known ageing wiring, or where a full rewire isn't feasible yet, they're a targeted upgrade. Many homeowners see them as essential for peace of mind.
