How much does EV charger installation cost in Thanet?

A standard home install up to 5 metres is £990 for a Sync Energy untethered charger, £1,020 for Sync Energy tethered, £1,250 for a Zappi untethered and £1,280 for a Zappi tethered. That includes the charger, the installation pack, labour, certification and DNO registration. Each metre over 5 metres is £20. Extra materials, or a home that already has a suitable consumer unit, are priced after a survey.

Do I need planning permission for a home EV charger?

In most cases, no — home EV charger installations are covered by permitted development rights. Listed buildings and properties in conservation areas may require consent. We will advise you during the survey.

What is the difference between tethered and untethered EV chargers?

A tethered charger has a fixed cable attached to the unit — convenient but locked to one connector type (usually Type 2). An untethered charger has a socket into which you plug your own cable, making it more flexible if you have multiple EVs with different cable types.

Can I charge my EV on a standard 3-pin socket?

Technically yes — a Mode 2 cable allows charging from a 13A socket at around 2.3kW — but this is slow (8–10 hours for a full charge) and not ideal for regular overnight charging from a domestic socket. A dedicated 7kW wall box charges 3x faster and is much safer for regular use.

Tethered or untethered — which should I choose?

We fit both ways on a Sync Energy and on a Zappi. Tethered has the lead on the unit: 7.5 metres on the Sync Energy, 6.5 metres on the Zappi. Untethered is a Type 2 socket, so you use your own cable. The fitted prices are on the estimator above.

Can I charge from a standard 13A socket?
